Most Excellent!

I have an excuse... I was preparing my costume for an important event. The attack of Paint was completely necessary too...

The 600

Go tell the Spartans we made a sequel...

600 posts. Woohoo. Yes, this is one of those "I don't really have anything to say but I've been bullied into blogging" posts. I can't steal something from PostSecret because they're all Valentines themed cards this week, mostly bleak and mopey, and I can't identify with any of them. Sucks to be them. Although it sucks to be me too because I've got a 2k rowing test tomorrow and I haven't been on a rowing machine seriously in a month. It's going to be bad. Possibly horrific. In fact, it had better be. I need more bad stuff to balance out my reason to brave the overly commercialised sickeningly red and pink Valentines displays...

Dirty Banker

I refuse to be banker. That way stealing from the bank's more of a challenge...

User Satisfaction

Quote of the moment:

There's nothing so bad about that... dumps can be a highly satisfying experience, especially when accompanied by quality literature. Today's highlight was actually, however, attempting to take the dogs for a walk around the school pitches and being mobbed by 9 year old girls all madly in love with the pair of them, especially Zulu (the 2 year old black labrador, as supposed to Ben, the 9-odd year old yellow labrador). I ended up refereeing a game of piggy-in-the-middle with complicated political overtones, which were only explained to me afterwards by my mother. There was me blithely thinking they were all getting on fine!

Mmmkay?

Quote of the moment:

Postsecret won "weblog of the year" at the 2006 bloggies. Hurrah for that. Also hurrah for the countryside. Didn't realise how much I missed it til I went on the fieldtrip last week. More on that later, when I work out how to publish pictures without the connecter lead for my camera/get back to uni where I left it.

For now (and probably most excitingly), the highlight of the week was Tuesday night, when ten of us hit the emptiness of central Shrewsbury. Apparently we got surrounded by police when we left after we were threatened by a solitary sufferer of short-man syndrome. My memory stops, however, before my videoed Travolta impressions, bluetoothed around next day, which were only eclipsed by my group-mate and (so he said the next day) drinking partner/competitor Gareth. While I was slumped on the common room floor pretending to be a starfish (again, apparently), he wandered into the canteen kitchen looking for some food. Since the only storage unlocked was the freezer he started trying to cook, then wandered off to bed leaving about 50 sausages to gently char, somehow not setting off the fire alarm. That's not all though: wearin boots out in the first place was a dodgy enough decision, but obeying the "remove boots here" sign and leaving them just inside the door of the kitchen deserves a round of applause.

And He Smote upon the Door Again a Second Time

Quote of the moment:

The new semester started well. I was on time for my first lecture. Score! Engineering Analysis 2 was following straight on and had no introduction. It was as dull as ever and delivered unnecessarily fast, so that we finished 10 minutes early but were scrambling to keep up with filling in the blanks on the lecture notes. The Computing module involves no learning of any language this year, we just play with "Maple" and something else, which are apparently as bewilderingly multifunctioned as AutoCad, which we were using last term.

The introduction to our labs sessions this term was a bit doom and gloom filled: we have to do "short reports" in a lab book as we do the experiment for 7 out of the 10 sessions, but for sessions 5, 7 and 9 we have to do "long reports" to be handed in the next week. They're apparently supposed to be 10 to 15 pages long.

(lapses into a Big James impression)

"DUDE! Where's your drink!"*

*Dude, I didnt do that much for my A-level coursework. Chemistry bombed anyway, but I think physics merited a C for less than that, and we have to do 3. The really good news is that I'm in group 7, and thus get to do my first one this week, and I have one left til after Easter to get in the way in the last week of lectures. Hurrah!

Does Joules Iron His Wrapping Paper?

Quote of the moment:
"It took quite some effort to track down your e-mail address but I thought I ought to say thank you for the lovely Xmas Card; it looks lovely next to the others in the bin."

- Joules strikes back.

Another classic from PostSecret this week:

My dad took away my un-ripped wrapping paper when the 'rents came to visit, bringing my birthday presents. Cue eye-rolling.

Met up with Paddy, Rob and Rob's young lady Hannah in town today (plus two of Hannah's mates who are at uni here). We ended up going to an all-you-can-eat Chinese buffet for supper, which they hadn't planned to stay for. Oops. I was bursting at the seams when we left... the fools only put out the crispy duck & pancakes when we'd been there for nearly an hour, damn them, plus pudding after that. No going out afterwards though, so I was safe. Once they'd got back on the train, I came home and sprawled on Little James' bed holding my stomach in instead.

Pave Afghanistan and Put Up a Golf Course

Quote of the moment:

What really struck me about it was the obvious ability of the person who drew it. The picture doesn't seem particularly martial, but perhaps it's by a soldier nonetheless, just showing the real main features of life there.

Blogger picture uploading. After investigation it seems to create a linked thumbnail of one of 3 set sizes on your blog with a link to the full sized picture. Handy for putting up large pictures, especially since the lagest size of thumbnail fits the width of my post column exactly. However, for some reason the ratio (normally 3:4 or 4:3) isn't kept and the thumbnails become 308x408 or vice versa. How rare!

While using my test blog to work this out, I noticed my test blogroll was showing Harry had recently updated. It was in fact the updating of his blog post by 10 new golf-related comments that triggered it. It puts the private road construction person/bot to shame! A sample:

Hey, you have a great blog here! I'm definitely going to bookmark you!

I have a taylor made golf club driver site. It pretty much covers taylor made golf club driver related stuff.

Come and check it out if you get time :-)

TAILOR MADE. As in made by a TAILOR, not someone called TAYLOR.

A final and random addition to this piecemeal post: MIT proves that tinfoil helmets do the opposite of protecting you from government mind rays, as found on badallbad.blogspot.com. For once a random comment that seems to come from a human!

Geekdom

Quote of the moment:

- Postsecret, courtesy of Rob "He-who-finds-anything-cool-online" Quill. Sure to trigger ecstacies of anger in Jim at all the emo-goth-manic-depressives (entertaining in itself) but it also contains some gems like that featured above.

Blogger crapped up yesterday and thus prevented me posting this:

Day off. Did nothing meaningful at all. Liked it.

I thought it had a certain succinct quality to it.

Prill's nod to the awesomeness of the Poyntz-Ward house challenge pairing reminded me of the all-OxfordUniversity Challenge semi-final between Balliol and Corpus Christi. Balliol retook the lead in the last few minutes following a closely fought contest, but blatantly deserved it more because of their obvious geek status. Balliol's pitiful "guy in strange haircut" combined with a rugby-chap captain and A GIRL (how rare!) left them trailing behind Corpus Christi by miles. Corpus' impressive lineup included one "Nehru suit", one ginger toff and two others also so odd they must have waltzed through their interviews with ease.

This, incidentally, involves my theory that the more like a reclusive geek you look, the better you fair at Oxbridge interviews(for geek subjects anyway), as born out by Roskelly of St Hilda's. Yup, that link does confirm the almost universal truth that someone with no chin, bat ears, cropped hair and glasses must be a lesbian. When I told Sarah she must be, she accused me of prejudice so I googled to vindicate my chauvanistic wiles.

Google - sponsoring the KKK since Good Ol' Boys learned to count. Once Jim has been sworn in as Grand Dragon of the new London Chapter, he could advocate a change to the more modern K3. After all, who says the Klan hates modernism?!

Back to my original theme: Bonus points should be awarded for geekness, after all 8 players are ranked in geek order on Millionaire style voting handsets. After this any geek answering a full set of bonus questions on their own adds their score to the team's total. If only it were on ITV, eh?
