The Order of Service

So... Saw off my Granny today. Cremation with family followed by memorial service at the parish church, then far too many sandwiches back at the house. Random occurence of the day: since she's married to one of my Granny's cousins the recently retired head of MI5 was there.

I ended up pondering, outside the church and later on, what would I want at my own funeral. I'd definitely put a wishlist in my will before going to Iraq or some other sandy holiday destination. Morbid fun all round, until Sarah decided that the poem I'd need read at my funeral would be...

Jabberwocky

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Jim and/or Will could do it in fine style. They could even get in some roleplay, one being the beamish boy. Apart from that awesomeness, there's a more sober and obvious choice:

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

Hymns:

Somewhere there should be room for this too:

"It's a dangerous business, Frodo, going out of your door. You step into the Road, and if you don't keep your feet, there is no knowing where you might be swept off to."

I <3 Band Geeks

The best bit's about 4.40 in. Until then you can just admire the costumes... my personal favourite is the Bowser bass drummer...

Collide

The dawn is breaking
A light shining through
You're barely waking
And I'm tangled up in you

- Howie Day, Collide.

Stuck in my head since randomly looking at this group earlier today. I love those first four lines, which were beautifully apposite this morning.

Fitting with the title, rowing and OTC are colliding rather a lot at the moment... the last weekend probably removed all chance I had of breaking back into the 'decent' level crews, but am currently being aimed towards rowing with effectively the 3rd eight, consisting of 7 newbies and myself. Rather weird, being the most experienced and technically proficient member of the crew. Sadly I'm not the fastest as of the 5k we did on Saturday but I was only one place and 7 seconds off. With sufficient time in the gym turning my arse numb on the rowing machines I can probably break back at least by ergo time into the top 16, but at what cost? This coming weekend's race, just for starters, clashes with an OTC training weekend. Uhoh. As things stand I'm staying in Cardiff and rowing. I just have to hope that there isn't OTC the BUSA Regatta weekend as well.

Revelations, Chapter 13

Quote of the moment:
"Recently I've been..."

...thinking McFly are like, so totally hot, and like, so cool, especially now they're in like, that Lindsey Lohan film.

No really, I have. Honest. I'm also loving the way the one second from left looks like a girl in boy's clothing. That look is so hot right now. Is it by Mugatu?

A Big Pile of Awesome

Quote of the moment:
"...and all those ridiculous shows on so-called "music television", like "Date My Sister's Cat" and "Pimp My Mom" and "Gyrate Suggestively For Cash While Having Your Bedroom Covered In Treacle By Supposedly Hot Faux-Skater Boys Who Enjoy Having Their Bottoms Stapled Together by Dwarfs While Nickelback Plays Loudly In The Background"."

Schweeeeeet. Awesome rant. Also awesome today were: going dog walking with my mum, wearing a (carefully weighed) 35lb pack (graded increments, doncha know) and making her yell at me because she was having to jog to keep up; going to Jim's with Will T and telling Jim's mum "Jim said it might be ok if we played tennis" despite Jim not being available at all - we figured if we couldn't get through, his mum couldn't, and warned him that he knew all along when he rang back much later; going to Will T's house to get some stuff and, due to his parents (wisely) not trusting him with the car keys and the attatched garage keys, having to retrieve his backpack from the garage via the back window.

The last was far and away the best. After we unscrewed the small top window with the handy screwdriver from my car, Will got stuck halfway in, the wrong way up. I then tried to post him through the right way up and nearly collapsed into the mess of rotting plums that covered the area, but eventually I, with the aid of the wheely bin, got through the window and managed to unhook my foot which was stuck on the sill and forcing me into a hanging splits. I wasn't really feeling the pain though, because my crushed nuts were still hurting too much.

Sweet Dreams Are Made of This

Quote of the moment:
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair
In 77 and 69 revolution was in the air
I was born too late and to a world that doesn't care
Oh I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair

- Sandi Thom, I Wish I Was a Punk Rocker, otherwise known as the Podgy song. Done another rejig of the links list... that and Tiggerland are my favourites. Y'know... Tiggerland... the film, with Colin Farrell as Christopher Robin, leading his toys through training for Vietnam...

Coming back to the real world for one of those annoying random point updates:

I put my sister on the train to her OTC camp on Friday. Unfortunately, Broadstairs being a minor station and stop time seemingly being minimised, by the time I got on and dropped her stuff that I was carrying, it'd already started moving. Not only was I minus a wallet, I'd walked into the (small rural) station in bare feet. Fortunately the trip back from Margate was short enough for the conductor not to reach me.

Portugal vs Holland this evening was the worst refereed World Cup game ever. 16 yellow cards, 4 reds, numerous pushings, shovings and arguments. I loved it, why aren't they all like that?!

Finally, hence the title, I had an absolutely awesome dream this morning. I was escaping from a gang in a Hong-Kong-esque city, ended up in a canal, swam a raft out past some patrol boats, through the harbour, out to a random island, up a river into the island into a kind of canal/directed river flow, past some huts very reminiscient of Apocalypse Now, got passed over by some helicopters (sadly failing to play Ride of the Valkyries), ditched my raft, was wading up the river/canal when I heard someone pushing through the trees beside me, so I ducked in under an overhanging willow-type tree and then their phone went off... which was my phone alarm waking me up. Perhaps pizza last night added to my fertile imagination (all of it was beautifully rendered, though not entirely original... some heavy Lost/Apocalypse Now/Platoon/Farcry referencing) so I shall have to purchase some cheese and see what tomorrow night brings. I refer you back to...

Procrastination-Devoid Nation

Quote of the moment:
...
I burned your incense
I ran a bath
And I noticed a letter that sat on your desk
It said "Hello love, I love you so love, meet me at midnight"
And no, it wasn't my writing
I'd better go soon
It wasn't my writing

So forgive me love
If I cry in your shower
...

- Your House - Alanis Morissette

Been listening to the acoustic version (ironically it's actually more heavily backed than the original, which was acapella) since it's one of the few albums I have on my laptop and everything else has gone home.

Today was all about... nothing. Did nothing of any use whatsoever. It felt wrong. Doing nothing of any use whatsoever is so much more fun and fulfilling when there are things you should actually be doing.

I'm So Excited...

Quote of the moment:
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
I'm about to lose control and I think I like it
I'm so excited and I just can't hide it
And I know I know I know I know I know I want you LYCRA

Wore my lovely lycra out in public for the first time, albeit under tracky b's and rowing jacket til I got to the rowing club at Llandaff. Rowed in the bodysuit and tech top (like the one pictured but with red stripes on black sleeves and body). Suprisingly snuggly warm, which only made my fingers feel colder! That's apparently what we'll be wearing to race in. When actually rowing it's ok, but the marshalling bit before we set off may apparently involve some sitting in the boat waiting and the forecast is 5 degrees colder than this evening.

On the plus side, the outing was awesome. Did some balance exercises and stuff for a while before blasting 2 lengths of the stretch of river (up and back). Was the best we've done so far and especially good given that it was only our second practice in that boat (which we'll be racing in) and last time the difference between the sets of oars mucked us right up. The race is 4 times as long as the stretch of river at Llandaff though.

Heroes

Quote of the moment:
It may sound absurd...but don’t be naive
Even heroes have the right to bleed
I may be disturbed...but won’t you concede
Even heroes have the right to dream

- Superman by Five for Fighting, the music on my newly tarted up Myspace. It's amazing what can be accomplished between laundry runs.

Also, while on my way to collect another load, I decided to be charitable and retrieve a broom from a bush outside the block next to the laundry. Since it was labelled with the ground floor flat number I rang the bell and left it propped in their doorway, and it was only when I got back and took my hoodie off that I realised Zorro was hiding in the bush. Catherine Zeta Jones must have been menaced by bandits on a family visit and required rescue. That, or Puss-in-Boots is trying to stir up trouble.

On the topic of heroes, Little James had a Top Gun pub-crawl last wednesday. He's never actually seen the film, but all he needs is a leather jacket and he'd be away! Goose though, not Maverick... he's far too tall (plus Goose gets Meg Ryan, Maverick only gets Kelly McGillis - that's what you get for being a short-arse...)

What We Do in Life Echoes in Eternity

Quote of the moment:
Fratres! Three weeks from now, I will be harvesting my crops. Imagine where you will be, and it shall be so. Hold the line! Stay with me! If you find yourself alone, riding in the green fields with the sun on your face, do not be troubled. For you are in Elysium, and you are already dead!

Brothers, what we do in life... echoes in eternity.

- Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North and General of the Felix Legions. (sound clip). I decided a full-on cavalry charge at the new semester was in order.

In other news, the Artic Monkeys have the "fastest-selling debut album in UK chart history" and the magpies were up to "Four for a boy" today. Which boy, though?

She's Got Issues

Quote of the moment:
Oh man she's got issues and I'm gonna pay - Offspring, She's Got Issues.

Unfortunately for those expecting a dramatic emotional revelation, the "She" in question is my laptop. I can connect to the network, but not the internet, unlike Little James, whose laptop I've stolen to post this. Oh the irony - his is an Acer, not mine.

Twas the Night Before the Night Before the Night Before Christmas

Quote of the moment:

Where are you and I'm so sorry
I cannot sleep I cannot dream tonight
I need somebody and always
This sick strange darkness
Comes creeping on so haunting every time
And as I stared I counted
Webs from all the spiders
Catching things and eating their insides
Like indecision to call you
and hear your voice of treason
Will you come home and stop this pain tonight
Stop this pain tonight

Don't waste your time on me you're already
The voice inside my head (I miss you)

- Blink 182, I Miss You. Ripe for the full orchestral backing treatment.

Just dropped Will T back home. Had some uber-loud Classic FM on with the windows down, in nostalgic tribute to the absent Jim. Earlier we played some ISS 98 with Sarah as my disadvantage. Lol. All was going well until she staged a walkout in protest at my over-zealous captaincy. I wasn't really shouting at her that much...

Managed to run 4k this morning. Still having issues with continuity: I can run with walking pauses further and faster than I can jog. Damn circuit training.

Homeward Bound

Quote of the moment:
Homeward bound
I wish I was
Homeward bound
Home, where my thought’s escaping
Home, where my music’s playing
Home, where my love lies waiting
Silently for me

- Simon and Garfunkel, Homeward Bound.

Thursday was awesome. Had Pizza Hut buffet for lunch with K3 (minus Matt) and Richard from K9. Circuits wasn't really happening, so played (quite firm, even solid) touch rugby with the 14-odd novices who turned up and our captain and v.c.

Went out to Bounce afterwards with the Pizza Hut posse. Using my line-out skills again I caught 3 "presents" being thrown out (fluffy headbands with pom-poms). Drunk Steve decided the one I was giving to Little James should be his though, and when I'd mauled it off him he wrapped his arms around my neck and pulled me over... on top of him. Foolish boy. I just lay there in the hope that neither of us would get chucked out if I didn't respond.

A while later Charlie, K9's honourary 6th member, reappeared with another Charlie... I had a very drunk Dougie leaning on me for a bit while we reminisced about Felsted. Apparently he'd had a bottle of whiskey and several pints of Snakebite. Apart from cricket he's doing law. My mental image of Dougie in black barrister's robes is very similar to Jason Isaacs as Lucius Malfoy:

I managed to keep hold of my particularly attractive pink fluffy pom-pom headband all night and it's now joined my collection of mementoes, along with the Halloween horns, the cheerleader pom-poms, the rubber duck and the hula-hoop.

We all stayed up playing on the xbox and watching DVDs (Napolean Dynamite and Trainspotting) until about 8am, at which point I joined Rich and Matt for fried breakfast. Mmmmm.

Slept from 11 to 3.30 and spent the rest of the day slobbing in K3. Have been tidying up and packing since about 1am, but that was interrupted twice by the fire alarm going off. Apparently two flats in K block had the glass in their red fire alarm things smashed within an hour of each other. Honestly. It's almost as if people were partying to celebrate the end of term.

I Ain't Fraid Of No Ghosts

Quote of the moment:
It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes,
You’re paralyzed

- Michael Jackson, Thriller.

Last song of the night at Metro's, "the stronghold of the alternative scene here in Cardiff". It was pretty cool, I must admit. The K3 boys bottled out of going with me, partly because it was raining and partly because they didn't wear costumes (even the two out of four who had them). Pussies. Had they gone on my little wander around the city center trying to find it, in the rain, in a cape and horns, with a trident, they would have been rewarded with a 20 minute wait just to make them appreciate the rain some more.

Once entry was gained however, there was ample compensation in the form of DOUBLE VODKA AND COKE FOR 99P. Yup. Uhuh. Absolutely awesome. I didn't actually have that many, since I didn't want to get too lairy/leery, but still. 99p, in a blue plastic cup that glows under the UV lights. Awesome.

The music was pretty cool, ranging from Greenday, Blink 182 and QUOTSA, through the Killers and the Kaiser Chiefs, through a couple of darker more gothesque songs to the cheese classics like the Ghostbusters theme and Thriller. It was Halloween, after all.

The company was acceptable too... A certain young lady, her flatmates and another handful from her block. Cat costume. Miaow.

Tears Stream... Down Your Face...

Quote of the moment:
Lights will guide you home
And ignite your bones
And I will try to fix you

- Coldplay, Fix You. Best Coldplay song ever. The rest of the album's ok, but this is... it's like listening to "Wake Me Up When September Ends" before it was released as a single and overhyped and overplayed. Even that hasn't stopped me loving Fix You yet.

Took Sarah to school to get her bus to the airport for the Malta netball tour, at 3am (4am BST). Maybe staying up til then playing ISS 98 wasn't such a good plan.

Rents dropped me and Vicky off at the station today in tome for the 2 o'clock to Liverpool Street. Vicky was crying and kept saying she didn't want to go back! We went together as far as London, then split to go our seperate ways on the Tube. Amazing how she didn't cry at leaving me! I scared someone into hurrying to the other end of the tube carriage when I took my backpack off and started opening the top. Lol. How else am I supposed to take my washing back with me!?

Been doing my best for rowing club communication this weekend via text message. Tonight, however, I'm staying in with my lovely "Environmental Fluid Mechanics" notes. Argh. 9am tests. We hatesss them we doesss.

- Guess the song, Rob style. You don't get the advantage of 'It must be Matt Good', but it's pretty piss easy.

Zulu's Battered Bum

Quote of the moment:
From the Dunmow Daily Blow:

"It has recently been reported that number of teenage delinquents (three to be exact) have begun to behave in a most ungracious manner. Revving up the power in the fecund Ford Kas (TM), a number of gangs of said delinquents have begun to attempt to, in the words of a member of the Classic FM Hoodlums, "spread the word of a music of love and peace, man". However, far from doing something appropriate, such as promoting Naxos CDs, they are, in fact, blasting out renditions of hardcore classical music hits through their car steros at peak volumes. Moreover, they do this in cul-de-sacs where everyone is at sleep. The police have so far declined to comment, but a local called them "bastards". One old man is in hospital after one Ka pulled up next to him whilst blasting out classical music of the Romantic genre. The local hospital says he is in a critical condition, suffering from Motes Arse. To have your say on the "three twats in a car playing classical music at one in the morning phenomenon", call this number...."

- taken from Newspaper Clippings by Mr William Thorne.

I forgot all about that bit... It must have been the sugar overload from the cinema sweets. Ooops. I think ASBO's are in order for all occupants of the vehicle.

The mysterious other man in Prill's life is revealed...

In addition to admiring the student emphasis in this well-composed photograph given by the unmade bed in the background, I'm curious about why that's MugPrill8, when there's no 5, 6 or 7 available online. Can we see them, or are they unsuitable for such a young and innocent audience?

I'm very disappointed that, in their high-speed dashes around marginal constituencies, no party leaders have visited Braintree. It's supposed to be the second most marginal Labour seat in the country, with Alan Hurst beating Brooks Newmark by 358 votes. Since Mr Newmark is said by The Times to be a future main player of the Conservative Party, I'm tempted to let him have a go. Before you slap me, the 2001 votes went thus:

It's pretty clear, having seen that and the similar table from 1997, is that the two main parties are very close and the Lib Dems are a distant third.

Now the sports headlines: Liverpool beat Chelsea to scrape through to the Champions League final. Personally I reckoned Chelsea had a much better chance of winning the final, probably against AC Milan, and thus it should have been Goliath that won.

Zulu Hit By Car

In news rather closer to home, while I was typing that earlier, Zulu started barking in the garden. I went to the dining room window to see him scrabbling at the gate, so I went out of the front door to see what he was after, thinking it must be a delivery man(they often drop parcels behind the gate). Sadly not. Zulu was barking at a family walking along the far side of the road. He ran through the house, shot through the open door and ignored my yells to charge across the road to see them. Nothing was coming along the road right then, but my dad came through from the garden after him and Zulu looped around the family then headed back towards the door.

As he stepped off the pavement he was hit from behind. Fortunately the car had slowed down after seeing him cross the road, so he wasn't sent flying, but he was knocked back onto the pavement and when my dad got to him he was thrashing about and bit my dad's arm when he picked him up. Meanwhile Ben ran out because Zulu was howling and I had to chase him around the junction in my dressing gown.

While my dad phoned the vet for an advance warning and my mum to let her know, I waited with Zulu in the car. He was very quiet and just sat still, snuggling up to my shoulder. I drove to the vet with my dad cradling him in the back and he's staying overnight, but the x-rays have come back clear, he's apparently standing up and quite perky, although dopey from the painkillers. His bum's probably quite bruised too!

Portering Pachyderms

Quote of the moment:
Hup two three four
Keep it up two three four
Hup two three four
Keep it up two three four
Company sound off!

Ho, the aim of our patrol
Is a question rather droll
For to march and drill
Over field and hill
Is a military goal!
Is a military goal!

Hup two three four
Dress it up two three four
Hup two three four
Dress it up two three four

By the ranks or single file
Over every jungle mile
Oh we stamp and crush
Through the underbrush
In a military style!
In a military style!

Hup two three four
Keep it up two three four

(Reprise)

Oh, we march from here to there
And it doesn't matter where
You can hear us push
Through the deepest bush
With a military air!
With a military air!

We're a cracker jack brigade
On a pachyderm parade
But we'd rather stroll to a water hole
For a furlough in the shade!
For a furlough in the shade!

- Colonel Hathi's March, The Jungle Book.

Given that I'm going to need to sing with the kiddiwinks as we walk out to the camping area, I thought I should learn that.

Last night I managed 50 situps in (the standard Army test time of) 2 minutes. Given that the requirement is 40, that's cause for a hurrah! This was achieved while watching Basil The Great Mouse Detective. Heard of it? Probably not, yet it is a Disney film, just a niche, cultish six-year-old-film-buffs-only one. Perhaps it was the start of my geek aspirations spotting the Dumbo toy in the toyshop scene.

Today I went on an extended dog walk with my dear mother, carrying a rucksack packed with 3 sleeping bags. An easy start to get me into the habit of it: both good for me and good practise for probably having to carry everything for the kiddies on the way to the campsite. Hurrah! Cue Prill style hyper moment: I CAN'T WAIT to go to America... It's going to be SO COOL. Ummm... tea... TEAAA!

[Would fetch tea if it wasn't disgusting filth]

I'm back. HEHEHE! I'm SO excited!

Yeah... back to cynical Will. For your delight and mockery I got an extra set of uniform and brought it home so I could take a piccy:

Look at the meat on those forearms. It would be pretty obvious who to eat in the event of a plane crash in the Andes!

Are You Gonna Bark All Day, Little Doggy?

Quote of the moment:
"Well I don't know why I came here tonight..." - Stuck In The Middle With You by Stealer's Wheel.

I was again scheduled to be working from 6pm til 11pm. Tonight I didn't leave until 2am. Hurrah. It did mean I only had to park up for about 15 minutes while Vicky dragged Lauren Bones, her co-joint-head-of-house, out of Dukes. Lauren managed to survive all the way home before throwing up behind the garage while I was putting the car away. Hopefully Zulu won't try to eat it tomorrow!

There was a 'banquet' going on in the hall at Waterfront Place today, so the kitchen was pretty hectic while the food was being served with double the normal flow of waitresses. On the plus side, once the DJ had started up and the dessert cleared, we could hear the cheese-fest music quite clearly through the wall. The spare chocolate tart type pudding went down a treat (I restricted myself to a mere 4 slices) but the highlight of the evening was definitely Stuck In The Middle With You being played.

I couldn't resist doing the Mr Blonde shuffle as I went back and forth putting plates on shelves. The Russians were confused, but one of the waiters joined in when he was bringing in some dirties from the restaurant!

Little British Wedding

Quote of the moment:
"Prince Charles and Camilla Parker-Bowles are to marry..." - Practically every channel, in extra programs as well as filling the normal news. Enough already! It had to happen sometime, she isn't going to be queen, just Duchess of Cornwall (Charles was - and is - the Duke of Cornwall before becoming Prince of Wales) now, and Princess Consort once he's crowned. Sounds perfectly sensible to me... What's the big deal?

Haha... Robbie Williams got owned at the Brit Awards: It was announced that two ex-members of Take That were there to present his award, and he looked like he was going to do toilet on the floor, but when they came on it was Matt Lucas and David Walliams, in string-vesty Take That costumes... LOL :D

Muse got robbed of the Best British Rock Act, but at least they got Best British Live Act! Even more funny than the Little Britain thing was Mike Skinner of The Streets missing going on stage to collect his award. According to the guy who went up for him, "The last time I saw him he was in the toilets". Haha...

[Edit 00:18 - Rob sent me an awesome interactive cartoon puzzle. Go try! Also, I forgot to mention that Ellen MacArthur has been made a Dame, at only 28 years old, for breaking the round-the-world solo sailing record. Like she said: "It's not over. There are plenty of records out there." Hurrah!]
